The best time to visit the Viana Palace

Come in April or May and the patios are at full bloom. Come at 10:00 on a Tuesday and you might have the Columnas to yourself. Here is how to time it.

The Palacio de Viana is open all year, and its patios look good in every season. But flowers, heat and crowds swing a lot between months, and the opening hours change in summer.

Temperatures below are long-term averages for Córdoba from AEMET, Spain's weather agency.

The quick answer

Go in April or May, on a Tuesday to Friday, at opening time (10:00). In July and August the palace opens 9:00 to 15:00 only, and afternoons in Córdoba average about 37°C, so go at 9:00. It is closed every Monday, and on Sundays it shuts at 15:00.

What is the best month to visit the Viana Palace?

April or May, when the patios are in flower and the average high is 23 to 27°C.

Geraniums, bougainvillea and jasmine peak in spring, and the orange blossom scents the older patios. Early May overlaps with the Patios Festival, which brings bigger crowds to the city. Late April is the sweet spot.

What are the opening hours by season?

September to June: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, Sundays and holidays 10:00 to 15:00. July and August: Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 15:00.

Is it worth visiting in summer?

Yes, if you go at 9:00: by early afternoon Córdoba averages about 37°C in July.

That's why the palace switches to morning hours in July and August. The patios are greener than flowery in summer, but the fountains and shade make them one of the cooler places in town. Bring water: food and drinks aren't allowed inside, so drink before you go in.

Which day of the week is best?

Tuesday to Friday; avoid Monday, when it's closed, and spring weekends, when it's busiest.

Sunday hours stop at 15:00. The palace opens on some Mondays that are public holidays, such as 12 October, and has special hours around Christmas, so check the official page.

What time of day is best?

At opening time, when the patios are calmest. Last admission is one hour before closing.

Go straight to the Patio de las Columnas and the garden while they are empty. In spring, late afternoon on a weekday is a good second choice, with softer light.

Should you go during the May Patios Festival?

Go if you also want the festival, but expect more people at the palace too.

The festival (4 to 17 May in 2026) is free and runs 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 22:00. Use the afternoon gap for the palace. Details in Viana Palace vs the Patios Festival.

What about autumn and winter?

Quieter and mild: average highs are 25°C in October and about 15°C in December, with fewer flowers but oranges on the trees.

Autumn has longer opening hours than summer and far fewer people than spring. Winter is the calmest time. The garden's box parterres and the Columnas keep their shape all year.

How do you combine it with the Mezquita?

Do the Mosque-Cathedral first, then walk 15 to 20 minutes north-east to the palace.

The Mezquita opens 10:00 to 19:00, with free entry from 8:30 to 9:30, Monday to Saturday, according to its official page; the general ticket is €15. In summer, flip it: the palace at 9:00, before it closes at 15:00. The skip-the-line Mezquita tour adds a guide and skips the ticket queue.
